DESAPARECIDOS: Mothers of the Disappeared
BEATRIZ LEWIN (age 77)
Beatriz is an active member of Asociación Madres de Plaza de Mayo - Linea Fundadora. Her son and daughter-in-law had only been married 10 months when they were taken from their home on the night of May 18, 1978. Jorge Marcelo Dyszel (age 21) and Mirta Schwalb de Dyszel (age 20) were studying at the university in their fields of educational science and physical rehabilitation. Each weekend the couple worked as volunteers in a poverty program. Because of the program's affiliation with a human rights organization, their activities were considered to be ideologically dangerous and a threat to the military regime.
Jorge and Mirta "disappeared" without a trace. All attempts by their parents to obtain information and assistance from local agencies, as well as state offices, were blocked. An attempt by Jorge's father to appeal directly to the Pope in 1979 was unsuccessful. Beatriz wants us to know that Rabbi Marshall Meyer is remembered, more than anyone else in Argentina, for his committed efforts on behalf of the families of Jewish Desaparecidos.
